Meet the tiniest new “staff members” of Always & Furever. 💛 Tonight, we’d love for you to officially meet Shaggy, Daphne, and Penny our rescued miniature horses who are about to become the heart of a brand‑new program: The Minis of Always & Furever! Shaggy is the shaggy haired lady who loves slow walks with lots of time to eat grass and deep breaths and endless carrots. Daphne is our ornerly round belly curious little queen, always the first to say hello and biggest fan of belly rubs on this early. Penny is the soft‑eyed sweetheart who is the boss and who keep the crew in line and matches the calmest, warmest, wildest energy :) Together, they’re more than cute faces in a barn. They’re the start of a Mini Horse Community Engagement Program that will: Visit senior homes and memory care communities to bring calm, connection, and joy. Welcome volunteers to help with grooming, walks, and enrichment. Share daily “mini moments” online so our supporters can feel like they’re right here in the pasture with us. Our goal is simple: through these mini horses to build big bridges between rescue animals and the humans who need them. Daphne’s ears are back because she’s a little irritated that I’m interrupting her grazing time for exercise! Taking good care of horses through regular exercise isn’t just a “nice to have”—it’s essential to their physical health, mental well-being, and overall longevity. First, horses are naturally active animals. In the wild, they move for miles each day while grazing. Regular exercise helps mimic that natural lifestyle, keeping their muscles strong, joints flexible, and cardiovascular system healthy. Without enough movement, horses can develop stiffness, वजन gain, poor circulation, and even conditions like laminitis or colic. Exercise is also critical for maintaining a healthy weight. Horses that don’t get enough activity are more prone to obesity, which can lead to serious metabolic issues. Consistent movement helps regulate their metabolism and keeps their bodies functioning properly. Just as important is the mental aspect. Horses are intelligent and sensitive animals. 🥲Daphne was not feeling too great today from her spring vaccinations that she received yesterday. She was having trouble turning her neck or even putting her head down to graze. Our vet is coming soon to evaluate her today. Some horses can be sensitive to vaccinations, and so it is something that we will be mindful of next spring when we do her yearly spring vaccinations. Spring vaccinations are a larger combination than fall and some horses can have a reaction to them. They usually begin to feel better after 24 hours. We are so fortunate to have our new on-staff veterinarians to come assist our ponies when needed. It is still expensive to keep these gals healthy even with our on-staff vets. Yesterday’s vaccinations and today’s vet visit cost about $300 for the 3 ponies. Dr Stafford came and gave Daphne some oral pain meds and she should be moving around more comfortably in a few hours and should be back to normal tomorrow. We dont know a lot about the ponies before they came here. And last year they were new to us and could have had a reaction and it wasnt noticed. Vaccinations are similar with humans and horses in that some people react stronger to say a shingles or flu vaccination than others. Some may feel a little tired but otherwise fine and some people feel really bad and have to take a day off of work. Just depends on their individual genetic makeup. She is feeling much better today and back to herself again. The pain medication really helped her and we made sure to walk her last night and let her out in the pasture for a bit. We are so fortunate to have our new on-staff veterinarians to come assist our ponies when needed. It is still expensive to keep these gals healthy even with our on-staff vets. Yesterday’s vaccinations and today’s vet visit cost between $300-$400 for the 3 ponies. 🩵🐴Thank you to a thoughtful donor that brought the minis some bags of shavings today to help with re-supplying all that we lost from the two bad storms we had recently that caused flooding in the pony barn. We cannot express enough the gratitude we have for all the support we receive from our donations. The cost of giving the ponies a healthy happy lifestyle does not come without its costs. One bag of shavings cost $8 a bag and is a necessity for horses while they are stalled in a barn to lay on and absorb urine. Shavings bedding provides a cushion for the ponies 400-500lb bodies when they lay down at night. It helps prevent sores on their hips and legs when getting up or down and provides their hooves with cushion while inside and not as active compared to when out in their turnout or pasture. We truly could not be a success and provider of excellent care for these deserved animals without our volunteers and donor support. It was the last day for the Spring Hill Middle Schoolers out at LRB with the dogs and mini ponies! They have been participating in learning about small and large animal care in conjunction with school curriculum for students interested in learning about the veterinarian profession. 💕We had such a wonderful day with the amazing students from Springhill Middle School who are part of their school’s volunteer club class! This semester, they chose Always And Furever as their community project, and today they came out ready to work hard and share so much kindness with our animals. The students helped with chores, grooming, playing with the dogs, and taking them on walks, giving every animal extra love and attention. Their compassion, enthusiasm, and willingness to help made a huge difference, and we are so grateful for the time and care they gave to our rescue pets. 🐴I was doing some groundwork with Daphne, who at first was much more interested in grazing without her muzzle on and going back over to her besties, lol 😂 but she settled in and ended nicely. 🧲Today the minis got their 5 week regularly scheduled ‘pedicures’ (hoof trims) by their personal professional farriers.🧲The A&F ponies get their feet trimmed every 5-6 weeks which is very important to their overall health.🐴 Without regular trims horses can get lameness issues and become very uncomfortable and eventually in pain from trying to compensate for overgrown hooves. It costs approximately $175 every 5 weeks for our farrier visit for the ponies trims. Fortunately these minis have good confirmation and hooves,✨so they require the minimum hoof maintenance. Miniature ponies can have a lot of congenital defects due to over in-breeding to obtain their small size and some require special shoes and orthotics that can run up to over $250 a visit. 🐴We had a very special day with the minis today visiting the residents at Brookdale Senior Living Center in Overland Park. ❤️There is something truly special about taking our mini ponies out into the community and watching the joy they bring to senior living centers. From gentle nuzzles to warm smiles and laughter, these visits create meaningful moments for residents who light up the second the ponies get off the trailer. The connection between animals and people is powerful, and our little ponies have a way of bringing comfort, conversation, and happiness wherever they go. As part of our outreach program, we love sharing these sweet interactions and giving residents a chance to spend time with the ponies up close. These visits not only brighten someone’s day, but also remind us how important community, compassion, and simple moments of joy truly are. 🐴Penny was tired after our senior visit yesterday. ❤️Trailering is often a stressor for horses because they are not sure where they’re going? or if they’re ever coming back?😢So, when a horse gets on a trailer, it has total and complete trust that you are going to keep them safe. It is important to try and have all trailer experiences be positive. 🤗I always have haynets on the trailer for them to have something to munch on to help relieve stress. Many horses that compete and travel frequently are on ulcer preventative medication, because a large majority of horses have ulcers from various stressors and not enough access to consistent forage for grazing. Providing our mini ponies with grazing muzzles and slow hay feeder nets allows them to graze continuously throughout the day and night to help slow down the consumption of carbs and sugar throughout the day but still allows them to graze almost continuously throughout the day and night. 🎆July 4th is always a stressful time for animals in Kansas with all the fireworks going off. It is definitely horses least favorite time of year in this area 😢. One of the ways I help to keep their stress level low is to have hay in front of them at all times for grazing. I like to put calming music on in the barn which provides a little background noise distraction against the fireworks going off intermittently all day. I also will spend extra time grooming them and walking them today to keep their minds occupied. 🐴We had the pleasure of spending a beautiful day with the high school youth group from Immanuel Lutheran Church, who traveled all the way from Bellevue, Nebraska, to the Kansas City area for a week of community service. It was truly inspiring to meet such compassionate young adults who have been giving back to their communities from an early age. One message they shared really stood out: you can take the things you love most in life and use them to make a difference in your community. Because of their love for animals, they dedicated their week to three animal-focused service projects—volunteering at a therapeutic horseback riding program and helping at two dog and cat rescue shelters. One comment we heard again and again from the group was how different their experience at Always & Furever felt after visiting another shelter the day before. They were touched by the personal attention, love, and individualized care each animal receives from our dedicated staff and volunteers. 🐴Just a little video on the importance of building a trusting and positive relationship with any horse. A horse can tell you a LOT from their body language and facial expressions, muzzle, ears and eyes are extremely expressive. Tuning into all of these cues are important tools to have to truly get know a horse inside and out and for both of you to have a truly enjoyable, rewarding time together. Penny has not been wanting to get caught in the pasture, in the barn, stall or be groomed. There is nothing worse than starting your time with a horse where they just don’t even want to come near you from the get-go. The other two ponies, Daphne and Shaggy, I have established a much more positive and trusting relationship with. So, what Penny’s behavior is telling me is that I need to take a step back and take some time to establish a better relationship with her from the ground. Every horse has a very distinct and different personality from another. It is the job of the handler to figure out those individual traits and build the relationship starting from where they are at. I have learned that if you don’t have that off the bat doing any further ground work, grooming, tacking up or riding is going to definitely have some gaping holes in it. First thing in the morning is probably their favorite time because they get to go out without their grazing muzzles for about 40 mins before coming in and eating grain. It is very important for horses to graze on grass or hay prior to eating their grain. We had Hannah and Rose who came out for Rose’s 11th birthday!!🥳🎈She chose to do community service on her birthday and A&F was her top pick.❤️What a beautiful gift to give her community on her birthday! We also had a busy and productive morning with our stellar volunteers Ann and Tom who came to help move the fans for better airflow in the barn for our minis during this difficult time for them with the heat. Having part shetland in their breeding does not allow them to get very thin coats in the summer like some thoroughbreds and warmbloods for example. So keeping them cool is a high priority! Day 2 and 3 of continuing the work with Penny and her avoidant behavior through trust building using consistency and positive reinforcement. This ground work appears so basic, but these are important basic building blocks needed for every horse to advance to jobs like getting tacked up, having a saddle or bit put in their mouth, learning a new skill or exercise, working with the vet and farrier etc. This video is a continuation of the last video that was filmed on the same subject. It is especially important for these particular ponies to have a good understanding of behavior expectations and be very tuned in to what their humans are doing around them. Especially when frequently surrounded by more novice volunteers, children and any group of individuals with disabilities that may have slower response times and cue recognition. Our mini ponies work so hard bringing smiles, comfort, and joy to seniors in assisted living communities, children, hospice patients, and so many others through our community outreach program. The minis got their hooves trimmed today by the farriers. The A&F ponies get their feet trimmed every 6 weeks which is very important to their health. Without regular trims horses can get lameness issues and become very uncomfortable and eventually in pain from trying to compensate for overgrown hooves. Daphne would like to express that she is not a fan of the dental procedure called a ‘float’ for horses. She freaks out getting the shot for the sedation which is absolutely crucial for the procedure. Daphne and Penny got their dental floats today! Daphne was a little difficult to sedate but we got her sedated! Her report was fairly good.🦷No teeth needed extracting or infections so the tooth-fairy should be very happy with her report. Penny had a good report from her float as well. We are so fortunate that these ponies were well maintained and loved by their previous owner. Bad news is that Shaggy was bad today and the vet has to come back. We couldn’t get her sedated. We were not expecting that from her. ❤️A few truths about Penny!❤️ Each horse has such individual personalities. It is fun to figure them out as your relationship grows. The connection between Penny and I is even stronger than it was 2 months ago. You can either grow more distant from horses that tend to be more difficult, or you can choose to meet them where they are at, not where YOU think or want them to be. The cool thing about horses is that people can either fight a 400-1200 lb animal or you can choose to have a giving relationship and put your ego aside. It is beautiful once the “click” happens and you understand one another and respect one another. The more smart the horse, the longer it takes. And Penny I feel is the smartest AND most athletic of the crew. Taking care of the minis gorgeous manes and tails is definitely a labor of love.💕 Grooming your animals is a wonderful opportunity to bond, connect and express your deep love and devotion to your pets care and well-being. Healthy, shiny, thick mane and tails are maintained through frequent, proper grooming techniques using a stiff bristled mane brush, always making sure to brush work down all the way down to the skin level to rid the areaof dead skin, dirt and loose hair, and invigorate oil production which helps prevent itchiness that can cause the horses to rub and tear large portions of their mane and tail out. Horses generally enjoy getting a thorough brushing of their mane and tails because they are difficult areas for them to reach and scratch which results in more dead skin, dirt and hair accumulating from not grooming. Most horses tend to rub out their tails from itching on objects much less frequently when properly groomed which also can reduce injuries and sores from rubbing on harming surfaces or scratching excessively. I especially love how Daphne’s tail has a patch of red in her white tail mimicking her body coat pattern.❤️❤️ Penny’s mane and tail is absolutely gorgeous! I have to trim her tail every 2 months about an inch off straight across the bottom to prevent her from stepping on it and ripping it out. To maintain pure white tails and remove staining, blue horse shampoos work fabulously, but is only really needed for show of course.
